Modern Inspector Mindset: Use the Best App for the Task

Adjuster Dave | August 7, 2015

At Spex we’re constantly looking for new technologies and features that we can integrate into our digital inspection platform or that compliment the work our users perform. The beauty of using the iPad to conduct inspections is that you have access to thousands of applications, which ensures you can always find workarounds and solutions to even the most niche tasks. At Spex, we focus on a core set of features including photos, videos, notes, drawings and a few more entry types that are coming soon. We encourage inspectors to reach out to us directly for solutions or to explore the App Store if they are struggling to handle a particular task inside of Spex. Whether you’re looking for something that handles water extraction related calculations or a better tool to draw floor plans, chances are there is a free or inexpensive app out there that does exactly what you’re looking for.

Adjuster Dave Tip: Don’t overthink it! Find an app that has the particular feature set you are looking for, complete the task, take a screenshot and import that screenshot photo into Spex.

The Handyman’s Integration:

  1. To switch to another app:

    a. Double-click the Home button to display recently used apps.
    b. Swipe left or right to find the app you want use.
    c. Tap the app to open it.

  2. To take and import screenshot photos:

    a. To take a screenshot, press the home button and the sleep/wake button simultaneously.
    b. Return to Spex, tap on the photo entry type and choose the screenshot from your photo library. Voilà!

Examples of Apps that our users like:

Room Sketching and Floorplans: Use Home Design 3d
Use Home Design 3d™ to draw rooms, create openings, and now add single and small walls. You can just as easily change the height or the thickness of the walls, the shape of the room itself, and its orientation by simply dragging/dropping, make your choice from among hundreds of objects and pieces of joinery proposed and change both the interior and exterior of your home.

Roof Pitch Gauge Photos: Use Pitch Gauge
Use Pitch Gauge™ to calculate the total size and slope of any roof. It includes two digital slope finders and a square calculator. Find slope without ever leaving the ground using camera-mode.

Measuring Property Lines: Use Planimeter
Use Planimeter™ to quickly measure lot sizes, crop fields, flat roofs, lawns, fences, driveways, or anything else visible on a satellite map.
